Muslims Aren’t A Race, So I Can’t Be Racist, Right? Wrong. | The Huffington Post

Need more proof that Islamophobia is a form of cultural racism? Consider the experience of Inderjit Singh Mukker. Mukker was assaulted in September 2015 for “looking Muslim”; he was dragged out of his car and beaten to a pulp by a man screaming “you’re a terrorist, bin Laden!” The twist here is that Mukker is not even Muslim; he is Sikh. The perpetrator of this crime looked at Mukker’s turban and thought “he’s a Muslim. He’s dangerous.” A cultural symbol, in this case, was used as a signifier to judge an entire group of people, however wrongly. Is this racism? Most definitely. Even Sikhs suffer from Islamophobia.

  1. I have heard ALL your arguments before too many times and I have no patience for BS. Blanket generalizations based on distorted, shallow and preconceived notions of Islam DO NOT INTEREST ME IN THE LEAST, except to ridicule and debunk. It’s impossible to argue rationally with someone who cherry picks passages from the Koran but won’t consider similar passages from other religious writings to be equally outdated. Furthermore, the arguments you use discount context, the social political, cultural and historical influences causing the current “Islamic” problem. As far as I am concerned your point of view is a classic example of “a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.”

I am persuaded that we have a problem with, based on current polling data, approximately 20% of the adherents of the worlds fastest growing and second largest +-1.5 billion strong, religious group. This includes people who agree with or are willing to participate in atrocities in the name of Islam.

With rare exceptions worlds leaders do not acknowledge a link with the teachings of Islam and the abhorrent behaviors of people who self identify as Muslims. Without exception the behaviors in question are things Mohammed did and or encouraged/instructed his followers to do. Yes, including conversion by the sword, public beheadings, taking sex slaves, killing of apostates, homosexuals, adulterers, subjugation of women and on and on. I suggest that Muslims who are doing these horrible things are not being radicalized but are in fact becoming more devout Muslims.

The fact that Islam is a religion, political movement and a legal system presents a unique set of problems for western civilization. Most folks know little to nothing about Islam and why should they. People tend to assume one religion is as benign as the next. To put voice to dissenting or critical perspective of any religion opens one to being labeled the pejorative du- jour. Free speech has suffered because there is a social taboo to criticize religion. Should a Islamic group take credit for nuking Los Angeles while the media records the perps screaming “God is great” at the top of their lungs would bring about a critical examination of people’s religious beliefs.

    Got any ideas?
